California Pt. 2

San Francisco was wonderful! Absolutely beautiful and although we were only there for two days, we saw a bunch of the city. I loved being able to share such great moments with my three talented friends Peter, Dave and Callan!

As for our time in Burbank... all I can say is MAGICAL! I had attended CTN's Animation Expo last year, but I must say they just keep getting better and better. While Dave and Peter stayed at their booth and attended portfolio reviews, I was off galavanting with Callan. There were so many workshops/lectures that weekend, it was hard to pick which ones to check out! Here's a bunch of sketches from the last few panels I had attended:

Giraffe Cake Topper

A LOT of stuff has happened over the last few weeks, both good and bad.

One very exciting event was the wedding of my best friend which I attended just last weekend in Athens, GA. Not only was I lucky enough to be the MOH but I was also asked to collaborate with Don Dailey to create their cake topper! It started as a simple sketch, was then altered and carved out by my dad and then finished with a layer of paint by yours truly.

I think it turned out pretty awesome, if I do say so myself. Not only did I get comments/praise all night from staff, family members and new friends but the bride and groom loved it too! I wish them all the best and of course, wouldn't mind doing another one of these sometime soon...

Inspiration Sunday

I was lucky enough to be invited by my friends Peter and Jared to visit Brooklyn on Sunday. We stopped by the Renegade Art Fair (where I got this great printed fabric created by the talented, Jordan Elise), the Brooklyn Flea (the food was delish) and various other shops here and there throughout the day. The necklaces, which I am in LOVE with, were found at the 24th street flea market! To top it off, I even got to see my friend Callan and her mom for a bit...

What a wonderful way to start off the summer!

Life has been hectic... like it always is right before summer starts.
First and foremost I am so proud of my brother for graduating from Siena College last weekend. YAY.

Amidst the chaos of Easter, college graduations and work, I'm still trying my best to sketch everyday!
Here are a few:

If any of you don't know: I love my two dogs.
They bring endless joy and laughter to my life. They're also great models to sketch when they aren't pestering me or running around the house.
The drawings towards the bottom were done in a sketchbook made by my talented friend Gina Furnari. (Check out her wonderful etsy shop!)

The Royal Wedding

One of my biggest passions has been animals, ever since I was a young girl and Franz Marc is one of my absolute favorite painters! This tiger is near and dear to my heart. I copied two of Marc's paintings as a child and this one was dedicated to my grandfather.

As a way to keep myself posting on a consistent basis, I'm creating "Inspiration Sunday" where I will post things that interest me and inspire me to do what I love...

In recent weeks I've started up a new project that forced me to study African cultures in depth. This picture is just one of the many that I have collected. I'm absolutely in love with the colors they choose to use in their fabrics and hope to incorporate a similar saturation in my drawings.

It's been a long time... full of work, turkey dinners and California!

Just got back this past weekend from attending the CTN Animation Expo. It was an amazing experience spent with two great friends and artists: Peter Emmerich and David DePasquale. I met so many wonderful fellow illustrators, artists and personal idols (that I have looked up to for years). Truly a wonderful experience that I hope to have again next year... portfolio in hand!

Here's a painting I did when I got back that is now in my parent's kitchen. It's a big piece that I had a lot of fun with!

Jury Duty

I finally had to succumb to New York State's Law of attending jury duty at some point in your life. ::woohoo:: It was a strange yet, remarkably easy experience. I drove over an hour away to be given a number and put in a room full of other miserable Long Islanders. There were some odd types... I'm convinced I was the most normal person in there.

Three hours later, (40pages of Eat Love Pray, two sketches, one bathroom break and an apple) the judge decided no more jurors were needed and I was set free along with every other enthusiastic man and woman! It was an good day.

Vacation Illustrations

About every 5-10 years my extended family has a wonderful reunion that is set up... usually in the mid west/west. Past years have included ventures to Ohio, Wisconsin and Missouri. But this year we traveled all the way out to Colorado and it was WONDERFUL!

As a way to keep us busy during traveling and down time, my dad and I collaborated on some drawings to narrate the trip.

Senior Show

It's been quite a journey but my time at school is coming to an end in just a few weeks... graduation is right around the corner! I was lucky enough to get three pieces into the Art & Design Senior Show, a nice finale to it all.

If you are in NYC between May 11th-25th, you should go check out the exhibit at the Fashion Institute of Technology's Museum!

**As icing on the cake, I found out this painting won GOLD for the entire Illustration show. I was so humbled and beyond appreciative to have received the honor.**

Two Sundays ago I attended the Sunday model session at Spring Studio in SOHO with Peter Emmerich, Lewie Smith and Ryan Jampole. It was fantastic. The atmosphere was quite cozy and allowed me to just get into the fun of drawing.

I finally got around to taking a model class at the Art League of Long Island this week. Super excited about it because it was the first time I had been to the new building! The model was wonderful and the people in the class were mellow and easy going... made the experience very enjoyable. I hope to get to a few more next week before school starts up again.

In my mentor class this past semester, we were given the freedom to design our own project. My theme - What would happen if you mixed crime dramas with classic fairytales?

After weeks and weeks... I FINALLY finished this painting. At first I wasn't into the project but it grew on me. I really enjoyed using my mom as a model and I think that overall it came out very well. I'm starting to absolutely love oil painting... I need to do more!

Pulling Teeth

Apparently, when you sign up to work at day camp they forget to show you the side note that says, by signing this you give up your soul to the devil. I have had very little time during the day to do ANYTHING. Between working with the kids, my online classes, volleyball and the gym I have produced very little, except a few sketches here and there... but thankfully that will change soon.

The passing children generously named the woman in the second sketch The Talking Bird Lady. From my view it looked as though she was chatting it up with the tree but I was definitely wrong about that one...

A graphic design caricature of Spock I tried to load onto my Cafe Press in order to sell some tees and sweatshirts. The site is wonderful in that it allows people to make a few bucks creating their own merchandise. However, the catch is that you can't infringe on the rights of companies, logos, people... yadayada. Long story short, I got "flagged" so I was unable to use this image on the site. No big deal though because I ended up creating a fun caricature for myself.

Hands, Hands, Hands

And so the sketching begins...

Really self-explanatory. Just a bunch of pen drawings of my left hand. I played with line and layers to see what would happen.

Whenever I'm bored and need something to draw, I always have my gnarly hands to fall back on.

Summer nights. Warm weather. Gardening.
My sanity is slowly returning and although I haven't produced any fabulous works yet, I hope to during these coming months. I want to be in top shape come fall semester.

In the meantime here's a project that I completed in my Photoshop/Corel Painter course. It's growing on me...

I did it. I got through my first oil painting without any major bumps or bruises. To my surprise... I loved every second of this project! It was a belated Mother's Day present and my parental-units were thrilled. Go me!

"Bike Ride"

Seeing as I don't have any new, exciting things to post I felt that I could share one of my recent (crude) animations. As much I need more practice I really enjoyed this class over the semester. The professor was wonderful and After Effects was simple to learn.

Conceptual Thinking

When confronted with the task of creating a conceptual piece I immediately turned to my favorite subject... animals. I wanted to imagine a world, in this case a circus, where the elephants aren't exactly what they seem. That maybe someone else is in control.

Currently a WIP, these are just quick sketches for my own reference for the final painting.

Farm Life

After a week long vacation in good 'ol Liberty, South Carolina I came back with very little. Never in a million years did I think that I was going to be so busy in such a small farm town! Between the pig wrangling, waterfalls hike and numerous other adventures I found a very small amount time to sit down and work. But I was able to finally try out my watercolor sketchbook! It's pretty awesome.
